Institutional strengthening of the National Water Resources Management Administration (DNGRH) and Regional Water Administrations (ARAs) in Mozambique

The SIXHIARA project aims to institutional strengthening in the field of Geographic Information Systems, hydrogeology and hydrology the technicians at DNGRH, ARA-Norte and ARA-Sul. Institutions that are responsible for water resource planning and management in Mozambique.

The implementation of this project is possible thanks to the funding provided by Xunta de Galicia, with the co-funding of iCarto, DNGRH, ARA-Sul and ARA-Norte. The project has been developed in several phases since 2012, and is currently in its VI phase (2018-2019).

The SIXHIARA project, led by iCarto, has the collaboration of Grupo de Ingeniería del Agua y del Medio Ambiente (GEAMA) as experts in hydrology and flood management, and the consultancy firmAmphos 21 in the area of hydrogeology. It was born as a complement to the PATCO project, led by the public entity Aguas de Galicia and funded by the European Union.

  • Georeferenced hydrological database for DNGRH, ARA-Norte and ARA-Sul.
  • National Information System adapted to the needs and methodologies of ARAs and DNGRH (SIRH).
  • More effective management of water resources, increasing work efficiency and improving planning and decision-making processes.
  • Delimitation of Mozambique’s river basins.
  • Studies of water demand for crops.
  • Flood studies.
  • Inventory of water resources, protection zones and water users (licences).
  • Hydrogeological study of the Pemba aquifers.
  • Training in Geographic Information Systems.
  • Training to carry out technical studies.
  • Outreach activities with ARAs and DNGRH (Seminars).
